Moon Walking, 2026

Coming up
Solo exhibition
Brunswick Street Gallery, Melbourne, VIC
12-29 November 2026

The works in Moon Walking emerge from Rowe’s emotional connection to the moon. Whether in landscapes she encounters or those she imagines, the moon draws her attention, transforming her experience of place. Working from sketches, photographs and memory, she reimagines these landscapes in the studio. Colour and form move beyond direct observation, opening the landscape to the possibilities of imagination.

Drawn to the mystery and quiet solitude of night, Rowe embraces the freedom that emerges as recognisable details recede and the imagination takes over. Within the darkness, the moon remains a constant and reassuring presence.

Through Moon Walking, Rowe explores the interplay of darkness and light, familiarity and mystery, and our shifting relationship with the world around us. Her work invites us to look up, to see the familiar anew, and to consider our connection to the natural world and the vastness beyond it.

Exhibition statement:

Moon Walking is a series of works created by Vanessa Rowe as she followed the cycle of the full moon. The exhibition takes its name from her instinctive habit of seeking out the moon wherever she finds herself.

Rowe’s fascination with the moon began in childhood, growing up in suburban Perth. She remembers sneaking into the backyard at night, captivated by how moonlight transformed familiar surroundings into something mysterious and magical. This early experience has stayed with her, shaping how she sees the world and prompting questions about our place within a much larger universe.

As friends became aware of her moon watching, they began sending her photographs of the full moon. What began as a personal pursuit gradually became a shared experience, allowing her to encounter the moon through other people’s eyes.
